Jack Gillen and crew aboard Spend A Buck claimed their third Salmon Slam title in four years on September 17 in Michigan City.
The Spend A Buck team muscled a 10-fish limit of 92.7 pounds of salmon and trout to the scales to claim the $500 top prize. Uncle Bud from New Buffalo finished second while Chris Mosley from Portage place third despite weighing eight fish, which were two shy of the limit. Mosley also had big fish for the contest, a 19.10 pound chinook.
Fishing with Gillen were son Joel, grandson Andrew, Kevin Jurries and Charlie Broadhurst.
"The fish were in 130 to 160 feet of water," Gillen said, adding; "we landed 25 fish."
Back deck coordinator Broadhurst said; "A Blue/Chrome (Spin Doctor) and Blue Bubble (pattern) fly on a diver and a magnum SOG (pattern) on a 500 copper (line) were the best set-ups.
