Its fun, its outdoors and its free for youngsters. The annual Kid's Fishing & Fun Day at the Michigan City chapter of the Izaak Walton League is set for 8 a.m. to noon on May 29, 2011.Fishing and casting games, bluegill and tadpole races, nature hikes and more will keep the kids busy. Fishing tackle, treats, hot dogs and pop will also be provided for the youngsters.
Contributions are received from the Hoosier Coho Club, Northwest Indiana Steelheaders and, most importantly, readers of The News-Dispatch who graciously donated "slightly used" fishing rods, reels and assorted tackle to be passed on to the youngsters.Again, its all free for the kids.
Leaving no kid inside is a catch phrase for the Ike's and the Fishing & Fun Day is a great reason to pry youngsters away the television and electronic games and show them there is another world outdoors. Volunteer Ike's will be on hand to help beginners and the inexperienced on everything from how to hook a bait a hook to casting to pointing out the best times and places to fish. They'll also point out cool plants and trees and maybe a creepy, crawling thing or two. So round up the kids, grandkids, nephews, nieces and those curious youngsters that come around when you bring home fish.
